    What is a Hit Box?

Hit boxes are invisible square box like areas that cover different parts of a player's character.
There are usually multiple hit boxes, one for the head, toros, arms, legs, etc.
When your bullet hits a box an amount of damage is done to your character.

The amount of damage can be set different for each box, the box covering the head can be set for
a one shot kill subtracting all HP on a headshot, the torso box can be set so it takes 2 bullets
to kill subtracting half of the HP for each bullet hit, or the legs can be set so that it takes
3 bullets subtracting a third of the character HP for each bullet.

When a character is standing still, the hit boxes are small and directly over the character.
If a character moves the boxes are made larger to help compensate for lag and movement.

Lag can cause the boxes to trail or lead the character, that is why leading or drifting
the shot gets results when aiming directly doesn't.

A picture is worth a thousand words so here is a link to an example how it works.
